How much a stock moves when the market moves
Beta measures how large a stock's moves tend to be relative to the market index. A beta of 1 moves roughly with the market, above 1 moves more, below 1 moves less. It is a tendency calculated from past data, and there is no guarantee the stock will keep behaving that way.
A stock with a beta of 1.5 tends to rise about 15% when the market rises 10%, and fall about 15% when it falls 10%.
